There has been a movement occurring in our profession, one that has been quietly generating interest and is providing real restorative benefits. Materials that are called “bioactive” have begun to take market share and gained interest over the last 10 years. To some, the term bioactive has become synonymous with hype. This is unfortunate, as there is something important occurring with these materials. Instead of calling them bioactive, perhaps they should be termed “bio-interactive,” because they can interact with variously demineralized teeth and provide needed ions to help heal damaged structure. It is time to understand the mechanisms of these interactive materials and create a renaissance of improvement in our restorative processes. |
