According to statistics from the American Dental Association, general practitioners perform more than 50% of all periodontal surgeries, almost half of all bony surgical extractions and 40% of all apicoectomies and root amputations – yet only 17% of all biopsies. Why is that? Performing a soft tissue biopsy is a much simpler procedure than any of the other procedures listed above. Unfortunately, many dentists do not learn how to perform a biopsy. The purpose of this CE webinar is to provide the dentist with a simple step-by-step protocol to perform soft tissue biopsies – with tools that you already have in your office! The discussion will conclude with a discussion of how to bill insurance companies for both the biopsy and for the pathology report.

As all dentists know, many patients put off care "until it hurts" which we understand as the development of an acute infection. Treatment of these dental emergencies can be difficult due to ineffective local anesthetic response, the severity of the infection and the patient's severe pain. However turning this into a positive experience for the patient can lead to a valued and long term doctor/patient relationship. This CE webinar will discuss and present specific case examples of dental infections. With this information the dentist can determine which ones can be treated in the office, which cases need initial medical (antibiotic management) and which ones require urgent referral to the emergency department or specialist.

Dentists have an important role to play in the opioid crisis. It is estimated that over 40% of a young adult’s first prescription of an opioid comes from a dentist. This group of patients are the most susceptible to developing an addiction to these drugs. This CE webinar will discuss the various issues of pain management and control with a focus at eliminating the need for opioids. It starts with initial management of pain by effective local anesthetic administration. The utilization of local anesthetic agents such as articaine have been shown to reduce the initial pain. This is then augmented with longer acting agents combined with non-steroidal and acetaminophen systemic administration. By using strategies currently available in practice dentists can work to be part of the solution to the opioid epidemic.
